Gender Euphoria

An experience transgender and non-binary individuals feel instead of or along with gender dysphoria. A trans or non-binary person may feel gender euphoria by presenting as the gender they identify with and/or by using their preferred pronouns.

“I experience gender euphoria when someone uses my preferred pronouns.”

“When they said I looked like a handsome young man, I felt a sense of gender euphoria”

Throughout all of my projects gender has been an overarching theme for me, so I've chosen to focus on gender euphoria and how i relate to/ experience it. One of the aspects of gender euphoria for me is clothing, wearing the right clothes that make me feel positively about my gender and body. Because for me clothing is a big part of gender euphoria i will explore my theme through textiles and fashion focusing on colour and shape.

gender expression has been a part of art and culture for centuries. from the "Sleeping Hermaphroditos" of the 3rd-1st century B.C ,to the androgynous statue "Guanyin of the southern sea" 11th-12 A.D., thereafter to the Neopolitan art of Jusepe de Ribera in his painting entitled "The bearded woman" and more recently the work of Lynda Benglis who parodied stereotypical gender roles within her photography. each of these pieces share the common theme of gender or gender expression but have very different presentations and intents. the first two pieces being created from tales of gods in different cultures and made as things of beauty. the work of Jusepe de Ribera, although made for private viewing as an oddity, highlights the subject as a beautiful maternal figure, the inscription on the plinth to the right saying "a great wonder of nature". Lynda Benglis' work was created to parody gender specific roles and challenge the chauvanistic/ male dominated art scene by mocking symbols of male power. this is why i love gender in art, it's such a wide topic that can be explored in such different ways.

project proposal.

this is a self-initiated and self-guided project allowing me to explore and draw upon my learning across a range of art and design disciplines. This project allows me to choose my own theme and how I will approach it, letting me develop my own creative voice. My creative question for my project is How do I relate to and interpret gender euphoria. How do I express my gender identity. My specialist pathway is fine art and textiles/fashion. I'm looking for an imaginative and visually pleasing outcome that expresses my thoughts, feelings and emotions relating to my question.

Our deadline is 27/05/22
My audience at large is the public, college staff and students but my aimed audience is the LGBTQ+ community.
The piece itself will be on a body form on a small platform and behind will be a few photos of me wearing the piece. My primary research included a visit to the natural history museum, where I photographed coral with a focus on exploring organic shapes. At the design museum I photographed clothing focusing on different sustainable materials, techniques and processes used to make them. This research will help me develop my ideas surrounding organic shapes, sustainability, textiles, and design. It will also inform my use of visual language, techniques, and materials.

I will give thought to the moods, subject, and ideas in my artist research and how each artist has represented these through their choice of materials, techniques, and visual language; I will compare this exploration with my intended outcomes and how I might use what I have learnt to achieve these. I will look at a range of artists and designers such as Frida Kahlo, nick cave, Yayoi Kusama, Beauford Delany and others.

As part of my secondary research, I will read books about and investigate online my theme to give me broader. understanding and coverage of my theme. I will research other artists interpretations of my theme to further develop my ideas. will think about ethical sustainability in terms of my material.

I will think about ethical sustainability in terms of my material. I will be using fabrics; I am aware of how wasteful fabric industries can be. I will also buy from my local fabric store to support a small local business.

The purpose of my work is to celebrate my gender and gender expression within a public space. My aim is for people to see the work as an extension of me. I generated initial ideas by consuming media and talking with my brother. Me and my brother talk a lot about film, art, gender and sexuality, these conversations often generate interesting ideas for themes or pieces to create. I intend to explore fabric as my main material, trying unique ways of creating pattern and shape. I'm going to incorporate self-portraiture within my exploration. I will be using and exploring lino cut, cyanotype, batik, and sewing. I will focus on colour, form and shape. I want to use more feminine colours to express my ideas.

To record reflective practice, I will write small ongoing comments in my sketchbook, consisting of what went well, what was not effective and what next. In my reflective practice I will plan what to do next. I will try to stick too weekly planning.
